We all love a warm comforting bowl of porridge in the morning in my family. We have tried many variations on standard oatmeal (which we also adore!). Today I'd like to share with you how to wake up to cooked breakfast using bulgur wheat. It saves so much time and only takes a couple of minutes in the evening to put together.
Overnight Bulgur Wheat Porridge
Two ways
Equipment
- Electric pressure cooker, optional
Ingredients
- 1 cup bulgur wheat
- 4 cup water (or make it 3 cups for heartier breakfast)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder optional
- 3 dates, pitted and chopped one per person
- 1 tbsp ghee optional
- milk to achieve desired consistency I used about one cup, optional
Instructions
Using a Pressure Cooker
- In the evening add water to your electric pressure cooker. I use Instant Pot Mini.
- Add bulgur wheat, cinnamon, dates and ghee, if using.
- Set up Pressure Cook option for 3 minutes on high pressure.
- Set up the delay timer to start 35 minutes before you plan to eat.
- In the morning, the pressure should be already released just before your meal. Open the lid and stir in the milk. Optionally, let it simmer for 5 minutes to thicken more.
- Serve! That is all you need to do on a busy morning.
Using the Hob
- In the evening, combine all the ingredients apart from water and milk in a medium saucepan.
- Add the water but it has to be hot using this method.
- Cover and leave it overnight.
- In the morning heat it through with the added milk.
- Enjoy!
Hi Irina,
Hope you are doing well 🙂 I’ve noticed you use milk for your porridge and I know Myra says milk should not be combined with other food items.. what are your thoughts on this ayurvedic principle?
Hiya! Thank you for your message. I understand that milk should not be combined with sour and salty foods, as it creates curdling reaction. I believe Myra is not against mixing milk with other sweet tastes (grains, dates) but I remember her saying using all milk for porridge is too heavy for digestion in the morning. This recipe mostly uses water and just a little milk, so for me it doesn’t cause any issues.
